From UK Beam Institute student to Jim Beam engineer

Alex Mayes, 2021 chemical engineering graduate, is one of many UK students to receive the Distilling, Wine and Brewing Studies Certificate (DWB) from University of Kentucky James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits (JBBI). He has been a process engineer at Jim Beam for more than three years now.

8 faculty and 8 graduate students named Lighthouse Beacon Foundation Scholars

Established in 2024, the Lighthouse Beacon Foundation Endowment supports faculty, research, graduate students, facilities and research infrastructure in the Pigman College of Engineering. In its inaugural year, the endowment has made $160,000 in funds available for distribution, with a priority on faculty and research scholar support.

David Lu, Ph.D candidate and US Department of Energy Scholar brings internship experience to Paducah, Ky.

David Lu, completed his summer internship at the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (EM) headquarters in Washington, D.C. in August. Lu was able to arrange a tour of a cleanup site near his hometown in Western Kentucky.

Grace Sun, a 16-year-old Paul Laurence Dunbar High School student, was awarded the $75,000 top prize from the 2024 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair for her work completed in Paterson's Organic Materials and Devices Laboratory.

The University of Kentucky Office of Nationally Competitive Awards has announced a total of eight students and recent graduates have been selected as award winners of the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program. Of these eight, five were from the Pigman College of Engineering.

Rollie Mills recipient of Karen Wetterhahn Award

Rollie Mills, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering and UK Superfund Research Program Center trainee, was selected by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Superfund Research Program (SRP) the 26th recipient of the Karen Wetterhahn Memorial Award.

Materials science innovator named 2023 AAAS Fellow

Yang-Tse Cheng, the Frank J. Derbyshire Professor of Materials Engineering in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, has been named an American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow.
